Welcome to our Faculty of Science!

Here you will find useful information and resources about our Science faculty.

Our courses in S3

Biology

In S3 Biology students will study Life on Earth looking at topics such as Ecosystems, photosynthesis, food production and evolution.

As they move into S4 they will then go on to look at cell biology focussing on cell structure, DNA and proteins, genetic engineering and respiration before moving onto multicellular organisms which covers cell reproduction, control and communication systems, reproduction, inheritance and transport in plants and animals.

The skills developed in Biology include analytical thinking, planning and problem solving in a biological context.

In S3 students will develop the skills and knowledge they need to make a positive progression in the subject.

Chemistry

In S3 Chemistry students will study Chemical changes and Structure with a focus on rates of reactions, periodic table, bonding, formulae and acids and bases.

As they move into S4 they will look at Natures Chemistry with a focus on hydrocarbons, alcohols and carboxylic acids before a focus on Chemistry in Society where topics such as metals, plastics and fertilisers allow students to see how chemistry impacts everyday life.

The skills developed in Chemistry include analytical thinking, planning and problem solving in a chemical context.

In S3 students will develop the skills and knowledge they need to make a positive progression in the subject.

Environmental Science

In S3 Environmental science students will study the Living Environment looking at topics such as Ecosystems, food chains and food webs, adaptation, the nitrogen cycle and fertilisers.

As they move into S4 they will go onto look at Earths resources focussing on sources of energy such as fossil fuels and the uses of crude oil before looking at the greenhouse effect. They will also study sustainability.

The skills developed in Environmental Science include numeracy, literacy and citizenship.

In S3 students will develop the skills and knowledge they need to make a positive progression in the subject.

Physics

In S3 Physics students will study Waves and Radiations looking at properties of waves, refraction, the electromagnetic spectrum and the applications of nuclear physics. They will then move onto Electricity and electrical circuits.

As they move into S4 they will study Properties of matter with a focus on heat and the gas laws before completing the course with Dynamics and Space where forces, acceleration and projectiles are covered.

The skills developed in Physics include analytical thinking, planning and problem solving in a physical context.

In S3 students will develop the skills and knowledge they need to make a positive progression in the subject.
