Our courses in S3

Administration & IT

In S3 Administration and IT, students will study IT skills and theory. This is an IT based course developing skills in Word, Spreadsheets, Email, Electronic diary, Publisher, Internet Research and Powerpoint. Students will also study theory based on Administrative Assistant and Health and Safety.

Going into S4, students will look at Databases. They will then complete more detailed Word and Spreadsheets assignments. They will complete theory in Customer Care, Security of Info, Property and People, plus Events. 

Skills developed throughout this course include IT software, communicating, researching, file management and problem solving.

In S3 students will develop the skills and knowledge they need to make a positive progression in the subject. The pathway for this course is outlined on the next page.

Business Management

In S3 Business Management students will study various aspects of the world of business and explore the activities of different types of business. 

Topics which will be covered in S3 include Understanding Business, which looks at different types of businesses and the influences that affect them. They will also study Marketing, which will look at areas such as the life cycle of a product, advertising and promotion as well as other related topics.

When pupils move into S4, they will also study Operations, Managing People and Finance.

Skills developed through this course include numeracy, information handling, enterprise and employability skills.

Computing Science

In S3, Computing Science students will develop their programming skills using a variety of programming languages. There are 4 main areas of Computing Science that will be studied which are Designing and Developing Websites, Creating and Manipulating Databases, Designing and Developing Functional Programs and Understanding Computer Architecture and Data Representation.

The various languages that will be used to achieve the above are HTML and JavaScript for Web Development, SQL for Databases and Python for Functional Programming. These will be further developed in S4.

Skills developed throughout this course include problem solving and independent thinking, research skills, communication through working in pairs/teams and of course coding skills.

In S3 students will develop the skills and knowledge they need to make a positive progression in the subject.

Hospitality

In S3, students will learn the importance of preventing food poisoning and food becoming contaminated by microorganisms (bacteria, moulds, yeasts, and viruses). They will also will learn to select and use the correct equipment to weigh and measure ingredients accurately and understand the role of the Eatwell plate in the diet. Pupils will use their knowledge from the Eatwell plate to adapt recipes to meet with the Scottish dietary goals as well as other related topics. These will be further developed in S4 and further topics of sustainability, food sensory and garnishing will also be covered.

Being organized is a key skill that students will develop in class by creating and following a time plan for practical lessons.

Throughout the year practical work will complement the course work to build on pupils’ knowledge of personal and kitchen hygiene; developing their practical skills to prepare and cook food according to a recipe.
