Mathematics & Numeracy

Welcome to the Faculty of Mathematics and Numeracy

Mathematics is vital to our everyday lives: allowing us to make sense of the world around us and to manage many aspects of living. It equips us with the skills we need to interpret and analyse information, simplify and solve problems, assess risk and make informed decisions.

Mathematics plays an important role in areas such as: science or technologies, and is vital to research and development in fields such as: engineering, computing science, medicine and finance. Learning Mathematics gives children and young people access to the wider curriculum and the opportunity to pursue further studies and interests. Studying Mathematics equips us with many of the skills required for life, learning and work.

At Lornshill Academy, Mathematics is one of the core subjects for all pupils in S1 – S3. Our courses follow a Broad General Education syllabus in S1-3 which generally covers Curriculum For Excellence levels 2 to 4.

In S4/5/6 pupils may choose to follow Life Skills Mathematics National 3 or 4, Mathematics National 4 or 5, continuing to Higher or Advanced Higher courses where appropriate. Progression to subsequent courses is dependent on attainment at previous levels.
