Home Economics


We provide scope for developing skills, knowledge, understanding and attributes through creative, practical and work-related activities. We develop skills that are recognized as being important for success in the world of work and are essential to being a responsible citizen and a confident individual. The skills and knowledge covered also offer an excellent platform for a range of careers and further study. During their time in the department pupils will study a selection of the following topics:

S1 – Home Economics – £20 per year

S2 – Home Economics – £20 per year

S3 – Fashion & Textile Technology – £30 per year

S3 Hospitality – £35 per year

S4 Hospitality – £40 per year

S5/6 – Hospitality – £45 per year

S5/6  – Practical Cake Craft – £40 per year

S5/6 – Fashion & Textile Technology – £35 per year

All pupils should bring a container to safely transport all dishes home. 

Course Outline

Fashion and Textile Technology- Nat 3/4/5
The Course enables learners to develop an understanding of: textile properties; characteristics and technologies; item development; fashion/textile trends and factors that affect fashion choice. The Course particularly emphasises the development of practical skills and textile construction techniques to make detailed fashion/textile items, to an appropriate standard of quality.

Health and Food Technology- Nat3/4/5 Higher
Health and Food Technology qualifications provide opportunities to study the relationships between health, nutrition, the functional properties of food, lifestyle choices and consumer issues. These courses develop an awareness of informed food and dietary choices that can have a positive effect on the health of learners and enable them to advise others. Learners also develop a range of skills and applications of food preparation techniques.

Hospitality Practical Cookery- Nat 3/4/5
Hospitality: develops a range of cookery skills and processes, as well as food preparation techniques. Planning and producing meals and presenting them appropriately, learners develop an understanding of ingredients from a variety of different sources, as well as of their uses and responsible sourcing and sustainability. Learners develop understanding of the impact of the choice of ingredients on health and wellbeing, and embed food safety and hygiene skills.
